How do I use Speech Output to read text aloud?

The Windows Help Center describes Speech Output as a way to hear your transcript using a locally installed text-to-speech voice. It can help you proofread a note by ear.

Set up Speech Output

  1. Open Settings → Speech Output if your build provides it.
  2. Enable the feature.
  3. Select an installed Windows voice.
  4. Adjust the speaking rate and output volume.
  5. Choose on-demand reading or automatic reading after dictation, where offered.

Available voices come from your system. Installing an additional voice can require an initial download.

Proofread a short note

  1. Dictate or load a short paragraph.
  2. Start reading with the control provided by your app.
  3. Listen while following the text on screen.
  4. Correct any mistaken names, numbers or wording before using the note.

Hearing the transcript does not confirm that it matches what you said. Compare important details yourself.

If you hear nothing

  • Check the selected voice and whether Speech Output is enabled.
  • Check the output volume, headphones and Windows audio device.
  • Check whether the trigger is set to on demand or off.
  • Try another installed voice and a short test sentence.

This guide covers the documented Windows control. Other platforms can offer different read-aloud or system accessibility options.
